What is labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that is designed to aesthetically change the appearance, shape, or size of the female genitalia. This procedure corrects functional issues as well as cosmetic concerns and provides a smaller, aesthetically pleasing appearance to the labia.

Am I a candidate for labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty in Newport Beach can be life-changing for women who experience discomfort, a lack of confidence, or sexual embarrassment because of longer or oversized labia. Candidates should meet the following requirements:

  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Have large, prominent, asymmetrical, or protruding labia
  • Are self-conscious or embarrassed about the size or appearance of their labia
  • Are experiencing pain or discomfort when they sit, exercise, wear tight clothes or have sex
  • Have torn or stretched labia after childbirth
  • Have sagging, enlarged or elongated labia due to aging

What to expect during a labiaplasty procedure

When receiving vaginal rejuvenation in Newport Beach with Dr. Garrett Wirth, he will work closely with you prior to your surgery, designing a surgical plan that best meets your cosmetic goals.

In most cases, labiaplasty can be performed under local anesthesia combined with a sedative to make you drowsy, with the duration varying depending upon the extent of your procedure (most are completed in one to two hours).

There are two main types of labiaplasty, the “trim technique” and the “wedge technique.” Variations of these techniques may also be done.

  • The “trim technique” involves directly removing the excess tissue from the labia and closing the incisions with sutures.
  • The “wedge technique” involves taking a single, V-shaped wedge of tissue from both sides of the labia, then suturing them together. This approach reduces the size of the labia minora while preserving its natural edges.

The wedge technique can minimize the risk of sensation loss, and also minimizes scarring along the edge of the labia, which results in a better aesthetic appearance.

Post-op and recovery

Following your labiaplasty in Newport Beach, Dr. Wirth will provide you with specific aftercare and hygiene instructions. This surgery is typically an outpatient procedure, so you should be able to leave within an hour of finishing surgery. Dr. Wirth will monitor your healing and will require that you make follow-up visits during the healing process.

The length of recovery and level of discomfort often varies among patients. It is common to experience somemild discomfort and swelling, which should subside over the course of two weeks. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within a few days and return to work within five days of their procedure.

Dr. Wirth will institute a “no sitting” protocol to avoid any pressure on that region during the healing process. It is recommended that you avoid engaging in penetrating sexual activity for up to six weeks. Complete healing may take up to three months.

Tips during recovery

  • Ice the area to help minimize discomfort.
  • Rest and take it easy while you recover for several days.
  • To ease discomfort while urinating, pour warm water over the area during urination.
  • Wear loose clothing.
