Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation Surgery?

You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation in Newport Beach if you:

  • Are at least 18 years old for saline implants or 21 for silicone implants.
  • Have fully developed breasts.
  • Are in good physical and mental health.
  • Have realistic expectations and desire this procedure for yourself, not to please others.
  • Have lost volume due to pregnancy, aging, or weight loss.
  • Want to correct uneven or small breasts.

Restoring Volume After Pregnancy, Weight Loss, or Aging

  • Breast Augmentation Alone: This is a great fit if your breasts have lost fullness but haven't started to sag. Implants or fat transfer can beautifully restore your youthful volume without needing to change the breast's position on your chest.
  • Breast Augmentation with a Lift: This is highly recommended if your nipple has dropped below the breast crease or your breasts have a deflated, drooping appearance. Adding volume alone will not correct stretched, sagging skin; a lift is required to reposition the tissue.

Customizing your breast augmentation

Dr. Wirth tailors every procedure to meet your personal aesthetic goals. You’ll have the chance to discuss:

  • Implant Type: Choose from silicone, saline, or gummy bear implants.
  • Size & Shape: Find the perfect size and shape to complement your body.
  • Profile: Decide on the projection or how far your implants will extend.

  • Placement: Choose between submuscular or subglandular implant placement.
  • Incision Locations: Dr. Wirth minimizes scarring with strategic incision placements.

During your consultation, you can even try on different breast implant sizes and shapes to visualize how they’ll look on your body.

What are the types of breast implants I can get?

Silicone Implants:

The most popular option, these implants feel and move like natural breasts. They’re available in various shapes and sizes, with gummy bear implants providing a natural teardrop shape and low risk of rupture.

Gummy Bear Implants:

Gummy Bear implants are a specific type of silicone implant with a firmer, cohesive gel. They provide a natural appearance with less risk of rupture or wrinkling.

Saline Implants:

A silicone shell filled with sterile salt water, these implants are inserted through a smaller incision. They offer a more affordable option but may not feel as natural as silicone.

Silicone vs. Saline at a Glance

Every implant type on this page has its own strengths, so here's how silicone (including Gummy Bear) and saline compare side by side:

Feature

Silicone (incl. Gummy Bear)

Saline

Feel

Soft, cohesive gel that moves and feels like natural breast tissue

Firmer to the touch; shell filled with sterile saltwater

Incision size

Slightly larger — implant is pre-filled before insertion

Smaller — implant is filled with saline after insertion

If it ruptures

May be a “silent rupture”; often needs an MRI to detect

Noticeable right away — the implant deflates, and the body safely absorbs the saline

What are My Breast Implant Placement Options?

Over the Muscle Placement

Ideal for women with sufficient breast tissue, this placement often allows for a faster recovery.

Under the Muscle Placement

This placement offers more natural results, especially for women with less natural breast tissue, as the chest muscle provides additional coverage and support.

What are My Implant Incision Options?

Your incisions will be made with precision to ensure minimal scarring:

  • In the Breast Crease: A discreet option located beneath the breast.
  • Around the Areola: A natural area where the scar is less noticeable.
  • Under the Armpit or Belly Button: Ideal for minimal visible scarring, although less common for saline implants.

What are My Breast Implant Profile Options?

The profile of the implant refers to how far the implant will project outward from the chest. Low-profile implants are wider and flatter, and high-profile implants narrower and project further. Implants come in the following profiles:

Allergan:

  • FULL
  • HIGH
  • EXTRA FULL
  • MODERATE
  • SMOOTH ROUND SALINE

Sientra:

  • LOW PROJECTION
  • MODERATE
  • MODERATE PLUS
  • HIGH
  • EXTRA HIGH

Mentor:

  • MODERATE PLUS BOOST
  • MODERATE HIGH BOOST
  • HIGH BOOST
  • MODERATE PLUS EXTRA
  • MODERATE HIGH EXTRA
  • HIGH EXTRA
  • MODERATE PLUS
  • ROUND HIGH
  • ULTRA-HIGH

Choosing the Right Implant Size

Implant volume is measured in cubic centimeters (cc), and profile options are generally grouped into low, moderate, moderate plus, full, and extra-full projections. See the American Society of Plastic Surgeons' guide to sizing for more details.

As a general guide, results vary by body frame and starting breast tissue:

  • 150–200cc: roughly a half to full cup size increase

  • 250–350cc: roughly a full to one-and-a-half cup size increase

  • 350cc and above: two or more cup sizes

During your consultation, Dr. Wirth takes three key measurements — your chest width, breast base width, and the amount of existing breast tissue — to narrow down a size and profile range. You'll then have the opportunity to try on implant sizers to see and feel how different volumes look on your own frame before finalizing your decision.

What is the Breast Augmentation Procedure and Surgery Like?

Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia and typically lasts 1-2 hours. Dr. Wirth will create a small pocket in the breast tissue and insert the implant. Once in place, he will close the incisions carefully to ensure a smooth recovery.

What is Breast Augmentation Recovery Like?

After your breast augmentation in Newport Beach with Dr. Wirth, and as the anesthesia begins to wane, you will likely experience light to moderate drowsiness and soreness in the treatment area. You’ll want to have a friend or family member there to drive you home.

Most patients return to light work in about 1-2 weeks, though you may need 4-6 weeks for full recovery. Here's what you can expect:

Initial Recovery: Expect soreness and swelling, but pain can be managed with medication.

Activity Restrictions: Avoid strenuous activity for the first 4-6 weeks to allow your body to heal properly.

Resuming Exercise: Most patients can return to normal physical activities within 4-6 weeks.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

What does breast augmentation procedure cost?

Pricing varies based on your individual goals and treatment plan. Exact costs are discussed during your private consultation, where you’ll receive a personalized quote. Your estimate will include the surgeon’s fee, facility and anesthesia costs, and all necessary follow-up care.

Can you use a fat transfer for breast augmentation?

Yes, a fat transfer can provide a more subtle, natural-looking breast enhancement.

Will my nipple sensation change?

You may experience some loss or change in sensation, which usually lasts about 6-12 months.

How soon can I drive after my breast augmentation?

You may drive when you’re comfortable and can move freely and easily again.

Will there be scarring?

As with any surgery, there will be scarring, but this will be as minimal as possible.

What size of breast implant should I get?

This is a personal choice for each patient. During your consultation, Dr. Wirth will help you try on and evaluate sizes to match your frame and aesthetic goals.

Will I be able to breastfeed after breast augmentation?

Yes. Patients who desire to breastfeed after receiving implants should discuss this with Dr. Wirth.

How long do breast implants last?

Implants usually last for ten years or longer.

Can other procedures be combined with a breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is often combined with a breast lift, tummy tuck, or as part of a mommy makeover. As a rule of thumb, if your nipple sits at or below the breast crease when unsupported, a lift is typically recommended alongside augmentation to reposition the breast rather than just adding volume. If your breasts have simply lost fullness without sagging, augmentation alone is usually enough.

Will I be able to get a mammogram after breast augmentation?

Yes, mammograms are safe for women with breast implants.
