What is Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing is a non-invasive laser treatment that creates tiny columns of laser energy penetrating the skin. The laser energy creates controlled skin damage, stimulating the body's natural healing process for new collagen and elastin, which helps improve the skin's texture and appearance.

We can customize the procedure to target specific areas of the skin, such as the face, neck, chest, and hands. For example, we can adjust the depth of the laser penetration to address different skin concerns.

What Are the Benefits of Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing can address a range of skin issues, including:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Scars, including acne scars
  • Hyperpigmentation, including age spots and sun damage
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Large pores

Another benefit is that the treatment can be combined with others for total facial rejuvenation, such as an upper eyelid lift, a facelift, and a neck lift.

More benefits of CO2 laser skin resurfacing in Newport Beach with Dr. Wirth include the following:

  • Improved skin texture and tone
  • Reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Reduced appearance of scars
  • Improved skin elasticity
  • Stimulated collagen production
  • Minimal downtime and reduced discomfort compared to ablative laser treatments
  • A smoother, brighter, and more youthful appearance
  • Tighter, firmer skin

DEKA DOT Fractional CO2

We proudly feature the DEKA DOT Fractional CO2 Laser System at W Med Spa Plastic Surgery. DEKA DOT takes fractional CO2 resurfacing to the next level, optimizing traditional treatments by producing MicroAblative Columns (MACs) of injury to the tissue while preserving untreated skin between these spots. This promotes collagen remodeling while providing rapid healing and increased patient comfort. DEKA DOT treatments are also highly versatile and customizable to meet your skin concerns.

Am I a Good Candidate for Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

Most light-complexion patients experiencing undesirable changes in the look and feel of their skin are excellent candidates for this treatment. However, this may not be ideal for patients with a naturally darker skin tone as it may change the skin’s pigmentation. Some patients undergo laser skin resurfacing as a stand-alone treatment, while others combine it with dermal fillers and wrinkle relaxers.

Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing Procedure

Before your laser skin resurfacing in Newport Beach at our office, you’ll consult our team to assess your specific anatomy and skin type, formulate a customized procedure plan, and address your questions and concerns.

On the day of your treatment, it is best to wear loose and comfortable clothing. A family member or friend should be available to drive you home after the procedure.

Treatment time for patients undergoing fractional CO2 laser resurfacing in the office is about 30 minutes, with 60 minutes of topical numbing before the treatment. Oral pain medication and nerve blocks are also given to improve patient comfort further. Patient comfort is our top priority, so we take every precaution to ensure the procedure is virtually pain-free. Most patients find fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing well worth any mild discomfort they may experience during and after treatment.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Treatment regimens are individually tailored to address each patient’s unique needs, concerns, and skin types. While some need just a single treatment, others may require several treatments spaced a few months apart for optimal results.

For example, you can do a series of light treatments or one deep treatment:

  • Light Laser Skin Resurfacing includes three treatments with no downtime for the face, neck, and decolletage
  • Deep Laser Skin Resurfacing includes one treatment with one week of downtime for the neck and face

Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing Results and Recovery

Here are some things to keep in mind when considering recovery after fractional CO2 laser resurfacing in Newport Beach:

  • Expect mild to moderate redness and swelling and some crusting of the skin in treated areas as aged and sun-damaged skin sloughs off to reveal healthier and more youthful skin beneath
  • The complete recovery process typically lasts one week, but some redness may continue beyond seven days as the deep tissue continues to repair itself
  • We will provide you with postoperative recovery suggestions, skincare routines, and guidelines to make your recovery a smooth experience

Immediately following treatment, your skin will be warm and appear as though you have a sunburn. Some swelling will be present around the eyes. Your skin will remain pink for up to five days as aged and damaged skin flakes off. By seven days after treatment, most flaking should be gone, and you can return to applying makeup.

At this point, your skin in the treated area will appear tighter, smoother, and more youthful-looking. Final results should be noticeable after three months, as the collagen synthesis initiated by the laser treatment has had time to materialize.
