Restore Your Natural Appearance After Trauma to the Ear

At Wirth Plastic Surgery, we take pride in our commitment to aesthetic excellence. Garrett Wirth, MD, MS, FACS provides a simple, outpatient earlobe repair surgery to patients in Newport Beach and throughout Orange County, that can return your earlobes to their natural state. We’ll work with you to design a treatment plan that restores your ears to their natural, beautiful state so you can absolutely love the way you look.

Am I a Good Candidate for Earlobe Repair?

Injuries or defects of the earlobe are typically caused when earrings are accidentally or forcefully pulled from a person’s ear, often by a child, or during hair combing. Heavy earrings or ear gauges can also be responsible for stretched or elongated ears, resulting in an unnatural appearance over time. Other reasons one might consider earlobe repair surgery include:

  • You no longer want gauged earrings
  • A piercing was too close to the edge of the ear
  • An earring was ripped out, causing damage
  • Your earlobe was damaged or torn

How Does Earlobe Repair Work?

Earlobe repair is a relatively simple, in-office procedure, performed under a local anesthetic. Dr. Wirth begins by stabilizing your ear for incision, then makes an incision, with the aid of high powered magnification, that allows him to precisely trim the skin around the stretched or lacerated earlobe, taking the natural curvature of your earlobe into account.

Once the excess skin and scar tissue has been removed, Dr. Wirth will suture the clean wound edges back together with very fine stitches before placing a dressing around your ears for about 24 hours. This will be followed by a thin wound covering, which will remain on your ears for about a week, until your stitches are finally removed.

What is the Earlobe Repair Procedure Like?

For the majority of our patients, earlobe repair at our Newport Beach office is an extremely straightforward procedure. It takes longer than the original piercing, but not generally by much! This outpatient procedure generally takes no more than an hour and requires only local anesthetic. Dr. Wirth removes any damaged skin and tissue, ensures the remaining tissue will leave a natural-looking lobe, then stitches the remaining skin together. Though every surgery carries with it the risk of scarring, we take every precaution to choose incision sites carefully and set our patients up for long-term success.

What Happens After Earlobe Repair?

Garrett Wirth, MD, MS, FACS will provide you with personalized instructions for post-operative care following your earlobe repair procedure, and most patients are mobile and capable of driving themselves home immediately after surgery, without additional supervision or care. Following surgery, you may experience some minor swelling or discomfort that can be controlled with over-the-counter pain medication.

There will be a minor scar at the site of repair that will begin to fade with time. Many patients are eager to have their earlobes re-pierced following surgery. While this is certainly an option, it is recommended that you wait at least two months in order to allow your earlobes to fully heal from surgery. Dr. Wirth will provide you with further details on the prospect of when and where the re-piercing of your ear should occur.
