Breast Reconstruction in Newport Beach

When considering breast reconstruction after a mastectomy, you have several different options available to you — many women choose to undergo breast implant surgery as a method of breast reconstruction, as this is a great way to enjoy results that feel natural and can restore your original proportions and bust size.

Are Tissue Expanders the Right Choice for Me?

The temporary placement of tissue expanders can be a method by which the breast skin and chest wall muscles are stretched out and expanded to a point where they’ll be able to comfortably accommodate the placement of a new implant. The expander will be picked out to match the size and shape of your eventual permanent implant, and will be gradually filled with a saline solution, to ensure that your chest will be able to comfortably and properly accommodate the implant, when it’s eventually placed to finalize your breast reconstruction. Your tissue expander can be placed either at the time of your mastectomy, or at a later time and date — Garrett Wirth, MD, MS, FACS will help you finalize these details during your consultation.

What’s the Actual Procedure Like?

Breast reconstruction aided by tissue expanders is something of a two-step process, with period visits required over the course of a period that usually takes between about two and six months. Once the tissue expander has been placed and your incisions have been healed, the expander will be gradually filled with a saline solution, gradually expanding the breast in a way that will allow it to accommodate the final implant.

You’ll experience some minor pressure or discomfort, as you feel the tissues in the area stretch and expand, but this won’t be serious or long-lasting.

The expander will be filled gradually, over the course of several months, until you’re ready for the final implant to be placed. You’ll need to avoid strenuous exercise during this period.
