Tuberous breasts are a result of the breasts failing to develop in the usual round, full shape. This condition begins during puberty. The breasts are constricted at the base and develop abnormally, resulting in tube-shaped, unusually pointy or significantly disporportionate breasts.

What are the signs of tuberous breasts?

Tuberous breasts should not be confused with smaller or somewhat-pointed breasts. This condition is inherited genetically and causes a markedly unusual appearance due to the constriction at the base. Signs of tuberous breasts include all or some of the following:

  • Lacking breast volume
  • Unusually pointy breasts
  • Disproportionate nipples
  • Longer breasts that are tube-shaped instead of the typical teardrop breast shape
  • Enlarged overly-prominent areolas
  • Misshapen breasts
  • An unusually wide space between the breasts

Causes of tuberous breasts

This genetic condition is caused by a thick band of fibrous tissue that grows at the base of the breast during puberty. This fibrous tissue hinders the naturally-rounded growth and full development of the breasts. The result is a varying range of unusual breast shapes and asymmetry.

The visual appearance of tuberous breasts can negatively affect a woman’s confidence and self-esteem. Functionally, bras and clothing may not fit well. In some cases, tuberous breasts can impair breastfeeding if the fibrous tissue band causes a lack of milk gland development.

Tuberous breast correction consultation

Dr. Wirth will begin with a consultation to examine your breasts, discuss your medical history, and understand your aesthetic goals. He will discuss your surgical options and explain what will happen in surgery to release the fibrous tissue constricting your breasts. Dr. Wirth will also help you determine which choice of breast augmentation is best for you based on your physical frame and desired breast appearance.

Tuberous breasts can be corrected with augmentation either by implant or fat transfer.

Breast augmentation with implants

Using implants to enhance the breasts provides women with options in terms of the type, size, shape, and profile of implant you would like. Dr. Wirth will go over these with you in detail and give you a chance to see and feel the different implants, including trying them on with a special bra.

Breast augmentation with fat transfer

Fat transfer breast augmentation provides breast augmentation using your own fat tissue taken from another area of your body where there is unwanted fat. Fat is usually removed from the thighs, hips, abdomen, bra roll, or any other area with enough fat to be removed. The fat is purified and then injected into the breasts to provide a natural, shapely volume.

What happens during tuberous breast correction surgery?

Tuberous breast correction surgery begins with general anesthesia, typically taking 2-3 hours to complete. Dr. Wirth will release the fibrous band of tissue at the base of your breasts that is constricting growth. This part of the surgery alone will help to reshape the breasts.

If you chose to also have a breast lift or augmentation, Dr. Wirth will either perform fat transfer augmentation as described above, or insert the implants. For women who chose to include a breast lift, Dr. Wirth will lift the breasts higher on the chest wall and trim away excess skin.

Recovery

Once your surgery is complete, you will be able to return home with a friend or family member. For the first 1-2 weeks, your breasts will be swollen and bruised as they heal. There will be drain tubes for 4-5 days, and you will wear a surgical bra to minimize swelling and support the new, attractive shape of your breasts.

Women are typically able to safely drive about about a week, and can go back to work and light activities. Dr. Wirth will have a follow up appointment with you after the first week to ensure you’re healing well. Wait to exercise or do strenuous activities for 4-6 weeks. Your breasts will continue to heal and resettle over the next few months, even after you’re feeling back to your usual self.
