Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure intended to improve the appearance and function of the inner lips surrounding the vaginal opening, known as the labia minora.
Dr. Garrett A. Wirth is a Board Certified plastic surgeon in Newport Beach specializing in labiaplasty. Through labiaplasty, Dr. Wirth can improve the shape, size, and symmetry of your labia, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.
Are You a Good Candidate for the Procedure?
You may be a potential candidate for labiaplasty if you meet some of the following criteria:
- You experience embarrassment about the appearance of your labia
- You dislike the shape or size of your labia
- You experience pain during intercourse as a result of an overly large labia
Additionally, it is essential for labiaplasty patients to possess good overall physical and mental health, along with realistic surgical expectations. During your consultation with Dr. Wirth, he will be able to determine if you are an ideal candidate for labiaplasty.
How Labiaplasty Works
Labiaplasty is a very personalized procedure. Prior to surgery, Dr. Wirth will work with you to design a surgical plan to best meet your cosmetic goals. In most cases, labiaplasty can be performed under local anesthesia combined with a sedative to make you drowsy. The time required for labiaplasty varies depending upon the extent of your procedure, but it is typically completed in 1-2 hours.
Utilizing specialized surgical tools, Dr. Wirth will make careful incisions to remove excess tissue from your labia. Specialized scalpels, scissors, or laser methods may be used to remove tissue. The location of these incisions and the removal technique will depend upon your cosmetic goals. Once the excess tissue has been removed, incisions will then be sutured with dissolvable stitches.
What Happens After the Procedure?
Following surgery, Dr. Wirth will provide you with specific aftercare and hygiene instructions. Labiaplasty is typically an outpatient procedure, so you should be able to leave within an hour of finishing surgery. Dr. Wirth will monitor your healing and will require that you make follow up visits during the healing process.
The length of recovery and level of discomfort often varies among patients. It is common to experience some mild discomfort and swelling, which should subside over the course of two weeks. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within a few days and return to work within five days of their procedure. Dr. Wirth will institute a “no sitting” protocol to avoid any pressure on that region during the healing process. It is recommended that you avoid engaging in penetrating sexual activity for up to six weeks. Complete healing may take up to three months.
