Candidates for Facial Fat Grafting
It is essential for facial fat grafting patients to possess good overall physical and psychological health. During your consultation with Dr. Wirth, you will be able to discuss your cosmetic goals and he will be able to determine if facial fat grafting is right for you.
A variety of facial contouring treatments can be carried out with facial fat grafting. You may be a potential candidate if you have:
- Recessed scars
- Thin lips
- Sunken cheeks
- Laugh lines
- Facial folds and creases
- Loss of volume through weight loss and/or aging
How Facial Fat Grafting Works
Facial fat grafting is an outpatient procedure that involves both a donor site (where the fat is removed) and a treatment site (where the fat is being transferred). Both areas will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic prior to your procedure to eliminate discomfort. Dr. Wirth will then use a small needle to remove fat from the donor site. Usually, the donor site will be the abdomen.
Once removed, the fat will then be cleansed and processed to remove excess fluids and damaged cells. It will then be re-injected into the treatment area using a smaller specified set of cannulas. This process may be repeated until the desired correction has been achieved. Fat can also be harvested through another procedure such as liposuction or a tummy tuck to obtain a larger amount of fat, to be used at a later date.
What Happens After Facial Fat Grafting?
There is little downtime following facial fat grafting and you should be able to return home within two hours of your procedure. It is common to experience some swelling, bruising or redness for the first several days. All swelling and bruising should subside within six weeks of your procedure. If the fat grafting is successful, results can last for years as it is your own fat. Staged (or follow up) procedures may be recommended or required.
Fat has the tendency to be re-absorbed into the body following facial fat grafting. Anywhere from 10-90 percent may be absorbed by the body. Typically 50-60% of the fat stays each time. Thus, you may require more than a single treatment for long-lasting results. If you do require additional treatment, you will need to wait at least three months after your initial treatment to allow all swelling to resolve and blood vessels to grow and support additional fat grafts.
