Candidates for Lip Augmentation
During your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Wirth, he will discuss your cosmetic goals and determine whether lip augmentation is an ideal choice for you. You should come prepared to discuss your medical history, drug allergies, current medications and social habits.
One or more of the following may indicate that you are a good candidate for lip augmentation:
- You possess good overall physical and emotional health
- You are bothered by the shape or fullness of your lips due to age or heredity
- You have fine lines or creases around your lips
How Lip Augmentation Works
Lip augmentation varies depending upon your goals. During the consultation process, Dr. Wirth will work with you to determine which method is best for you. Lip augmentation is typically performed using some type of injectable filler. Hyaluronic acids such as JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®, as well as collagen or fat injections, can be used to enhance the appearance of your lips.
Prior to your procedure, the treatment area will be thoroughly cleansed and a dental block or topical anesthetic will be used to numb your lips. Dr. Wirth will then use a small needled syringe or cannula specific to your procedure to inject filler or fat into areas the areas of your lips that require additional volume. Dr. Wirth may need to briefly massage the treatment area to ensure proper contour. The entire procedure can be performed in less than 30 minutes.
What Happens After Lip Augmentation?
Recovery from lip augmentation is relatively fast. It is common for patients to experience some swelling and soreness in the treatment area for a few days. Your lips may also feel fuller than expected immediately following treatment. This feeling will subside as the anesthetic wears off and as swelling reduces and you mentally adjust to the results of your lip augmentation.
The results of your lip augmentation will not be permanent. Most lip augmentation procedures can last for up to six months or longer with the new injectables or be permanent with fat injections. The duration will vary depending upon the method you have chosen. If an injectable filler was used, your body will gradually reabsorb the material, a process which is expedited in facial regions that experience a lot of movement. Regular maintenance treatments can be scheduled with Dr. Wirth to prolong the results of your lip augmentation.
