A chemical peel is a chemical exfoliation technique that can be used to drastically improve the appearance of your skin by removing damaged outer layers of skin. Dr. Wirth specializes in skin resurfacing techniques. He offers a wide variety of Newport Beach chemical peel formulations to treat a host of skin conditions such as acne, discoloration, wrinkles and more.
Candidates for a Chemical Peel
You may be a potential candidate for a chemical peel if you are in good physical health and you wish to improve the appearance of your:
- Skin texture
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Sun damaged skin
- Skin color irregularities
The different types of chemical peels come in varying strengths and provide different levels of treatment. Following an evaluation with Dr. Wirth, he will be able to determine the appropriate chemical peel treatment for your skin type.
How Chemical Peels Work
The procedures for a light chemical peel can be completed in about 15 minutes. Dr. Wirth will work with you to choose a solution appropriate for your skin type prior to treatment. Light chemical peels are typically composed of alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), such as glycolic, lactic or fruit acid. Dr. Wirth will apply the solution to the treatment area using a sponge, swab or brush. Light chemical peels can be applied weekly to obtain optimal results.
Medium and deep chemical peels may take up to an hour to complete and typically require topical, but occasionally a local or general anesthesia to minimize discomfort. The solutions are composed of much “heavier” chemicals such as phenol, acetone and trichloroacetic acid that are capable of penetrating several layers of skin and generally creates a greater benefit for you. Dr. Wirth will thoroughly cleanse your skin prior to the peel, and cool compresses or fans may be used to cool your skin during and after the procedure.
What Happens After a Chemical Peel?
Recovery time following a chemical peel depends on what kind of peel was done and how deep it was. Dr. Wirth will provide you with specific aftercare and hygiene instructions to prevent infection and aid in the healing process. You may be required to cleanse your skin frequently following your chemical peel, as well as apply a specialized ointment to your skin.
There is no downtime required after a light chemical peel. You may experience slight discomfort, but you should be able to resume normal activities immediately. Your skin may be slightly pink and only minimal peeling will occur. Medium and deep chemical peels are also performed on an outpatient basis, but you will need to take 4-6 days of active peeling into consideration of your schedule. The skin will be tight and itchy for several days, followed by a period of flaking and peeling. Complete healing of the skin may take several months, but returned to skin health protocol starts in one week.
