What Dr. Wirth Can Do for Breast Cancer Survivors Sources
You’ve Beaten Breast Cancer, and Now…
Beating breast cancer is an incredible accomplishment! You should be proud of yourself and all that you have achieved. But, being a breast cancer survivor has its own challenges, some of which can seem overwhelming and frightening to consider. You can rest assured that Dr. Garrett Wirth will assist you every step of the way.
You’re In Charge
The breast cancer survivor/plastic surgeon relationship is long lasting, so it is important that you select a surgeon who is patient, knowledgeable and fully committed to seeing you happy and healthy. Dr. Wirth understands the emotions that arise when dealing with breast cancer survivorship. While you may be feeling nervous about your prospective options, it is important to remember that YOU are the one in charge. The outcome of your breasts is something that only you can determine. Dr. Wirth will ensure that you feel empowered and informed about your choices, and that you will be pleased with your results.
What Dr. Wirth Can Do for Breast Cancer Survivors
There are many issues that you may be dealing with as a result of breast cancer treatment, such as lumpectomy defects, scarring, radiation therapy injured breasts and breast ptosis. Or perhaps you have already had your breasts reconstructed, but you now have noticeable deformities or capsular contracture. Dr. Wirth can assist you with all of these problems and help you achieve the breasts you desire.
You may have undergone a lumpectomy to remove a tumor. While often effective at treating breast cancer, lumpectomies sometimes leave women with uneven, deformed breasts. Dr. Wirth can remedy these issues using techniques such as fat grafting, silicone or saline implants or breast reduction to achieve more symmetrical, full breasts. Flap reconstruction (using tissue from another part of the body, such as the abdomen or back) can also be performed to restore your breasts’ fullness.
Your cancer may be gone, but the scars of your experience can remain for much longer. Dr. Wirth can improve the appearance of your scars to make them less noticeable. This can often be done at the time of another surgery to minimize recovery time.
Radiation Injury Correction
Radiation therapy can wreak havoc on your breasts. Fortunately, Dr. Wirth can improve their appearance with flap reconstruction or tissue expansion, followed by implants. As with all other breast correction options, the choice is up to you! Dr. Wirth will take your health and personal preferences into account as he works alongside you to determine the optimum course of action, which you will ultimately decide upon.
Mastectomies, lumpectomies and previous breast reconstruction can leave your breasts sagging, which is known as breast ptosis. To remedy this, Dr. Wirth can perform a breast lift, breast augmentation (using implants, fat injections or flap reconstruction) or a combination of the two procedures.
Capsular Contracture and Deformities After Previous Breast Reconstruction
Occasionally, a condition known as “capsular contracture” will occur after receiving breast implants. This takes place when the tissue surrounding the implant hardens and squeezes the implant, leaving the implant hardened. Dr. Wirth can correct this issue by replacing the implant with a new one via the original implant incision location.
You may also be dealing with deformities and asymmetry after a prior breast reconstruction surgery. This can be solved with fat injections, flap reconstruction or breast reduction. Whatever your decision, Dr. Wirth will work with you to create a customized plan so that you can have breasts you are confident about!
Getting Your Life Back
Establishing a “new normal” after breast cancer can be difficult. There are many things you can do to take back your power and remain free of breast cancer, such as exercising and eating healthily. Maintaining a healthy weight has been proven to lessen your chance of breast cancer recurrence (Personalized Breast Care, p. 228). You can also join a network of breast cancer survivors. This can provide a chance for you to gain support and friendships as you bond with others who have beaten the disease.
Many other ways to thrive as a breast cancer survivor are included in Personalized Breast Care: A Guide for Cosmetic Surgery, Breast Cancer, and Reconstruction, available on Amazon.com. Dr. Wirth will listen to and work with you on your breast cancer survivor journey to ensure that you focus on what’s most important—staying healthy and living your best life.
